Men’s Zoot Sports Ultra TT 2.0

Details:
- Medium width (mens)
- Weight 10oz
- CarbonSpan+ technology
- Color – Solar/Blue Chip
- Looks – FAST

We had seen plenty of people wearing these sneaks at recent events and we were dying to give them a try.  They just LOOK fast!    They didn’t disappoint – light, flexible but still with sufficient stability that our reviewer needs.  They kept very dry as well – even in what proved to be very humid conditions.  The thing we like most is Zoot’s Quick-Lace system which allowed us to get the shoes on very quickly without having to switch the original laces for those awful quick-tie elastic versions….   These rank as probably the best running shoes we have tested this year – give them a try!    $141 from this store and come with the risk free purchase option – free shipping both ways.

Women’s – Zoot Sports Ultra Race 2.0

Details:
- Medium width (womens)
- Weight 7oz
- CarbonSpan+ technology
- Color – Silver/Spa

We love the Zoot Sports – Ultra Race 2.0.  Zoot are certainly making a play for the triathlon shoe market and are making inroads into the more established players marketshare.  And with shoes as great as the Ultra Race 2.0 its not hard to see why.  The perforated synthetic upper offers a snug fit while actively accommodating foot swelling during a race.  The BareFit construction is ideal  for sockless wear and the Zoot Tri-Dry technology limits water retention.   The shoes are very comfortable and so far have stood up to some serious testing.  One of the TriathlonShoes Team wore a pair for an Olympic race over the weekend and he has come back with glowing reports.   We found them here for under $160 and as a special offer there is free shipping both ways (in case you need to exchange for a different size – risk free online shopping – which is what we love!)

Pearl Izumi Tri Fly II Carbon Triathlon Shoe

tri fly blackDetails:

— Low plate stack height of 7mm

— Weight 235g

— Carbon fiber sole

— Color – white/red/black

— List price – $179.95 (but we found under $100 for you!)

The manufacturers ask if you’re “ready to win a triathlon?”  We have to admit that out of all the shoes we’ve tested, the Tri Fly 2 Carbon from Pearl iZUMi comes pretty close to being the perfect shoe.   It even looks fast!  It’s lined mesh technology allows you to lose the socks and the forefoot provides great ventilation.  We were a little concerned that the two-strap approach could slow us down at transition but after putting this shoe through our tests we ultimately didn’t find it a problem.   It’s a carbon shoe so provides maximum power output and is Look compatible.  At a list price of $179.95 its not exactly cheap, but we’ve done some digging around and we’ve managed to find it for under $100 here. You can thank us later!  Go get em!

Basic Guide to Triathlon Bike Shoes

It is obviously key to have a really good pair of comfortable running shoes to get you through the closing stage of a triathlon.  But equally key is choosing the right pair of triathlon shoes for the bicycle leg, otherwise it is possible that the harm will have been done even before you shift into your running shoes.

Basically, triathlon biking shoes are modified biking shoes.  The same rules apply with the one difference being that it is seriously important that you can get in and out of your triathlon shoes very speedily.  This is not a consideration for bicycle shoes and many leading cyclists will opt for hard-to-remove shoes in search of more torque.

The Basics:

The most important factor to search for in any cycling shoe – for normal road races or a triathlon – is solid sole.  This makes sure there is no ‘cushion effect’ which results in a a drop in power.  Perfect is a carbon-based sole however this is a an expensive choice.  If your budget does not permit a carbon shoe then a orthodox plastic soled shoe will do.

You also should have a tight (but not too tight) at the heel and toes plus an universal snug feel around the whole foot.  There should be no ‘wiggle room’ inside the shoe as this will result in a loss of torque and inefficient foot movement, in addition to the chance of blisters.

Triathlon Shoe specifics:

You must be able to get your triathlon shoes on and off fast.  You also have to do this at Transition 1 and Transition 2 during which time you will be hot, exhausted and possibly still wet from the swim.  An easy to use fastening system is key – the traditional ‘three fastening’ system seen in road shoes has been proven to be over complex.  Therefore most triathlon shoes use a single, wide fastening Velcro strap.  This is a great compromise, providing sufficient stability and protection while also easy and quick to use.

Style – why not?

You may have likely spent a lot of money on your bike, your helmet and your clothing.  We appreciate if you want your shoes to look attractive as well.  Thankfully manufacturers are aware that triathletes are stylish and have created some fantastic looking models.

Research is key.  Don’t make a purchase without first doing your homework.

Good luck!

Find the Right Triathlon Shoes for You

We will help you find the right triathlon shoes.  We have tested dozens of models, shapes and sizes to ensure you can achieve your goals.

It’s a fact that spending time choosing the correct triathlon shoe is something that most triathletes neglect.  It’s so easy to get caught up in the excitment of the latest carbon bike, aero helmet or efficient wetsuit and just throw on your existing sneakers or running shoes for the last leg.

This is a serious error that can severly impact your performance and leave you open to the risk of injury.  Think about it – the triathlon shoe should be the biggest weapon in your arsenal.  Whether it’s a road bike shoe or a pair of triathlon shoes for the run, it’s your feet that are the pressure points for your entire body for the tens of thousands of crank revolutions on the bike and every foot impact on the run.

Throw those old sneakers away and invest in the best bike shoes (traditional or carbon shoes) and tri shoes for running today.  Start your triathlon training now and watch out for plantar fasciitis.
